Dubrovnik is so much more than just the Old Town. If you are visiting any time from May – October then a definite must do is to visit the islands just off the coast of Dubrovnik. With their well preserved natural beauty and pristine clear waters, they are the perfect getaway from the city crowds.
The Elaphite islands
This chain of islands between the Pelješac penninsula and the Lapad penninsula was a favorite destination for Dubrovniks aristocrats during the time of the Dubrovnik Republic. The remains of old churches, summer residences and basilicas are scattered all over the islands.
The Elaphite islands consist of a large number of reefs and rocks as well as eight islands and five islets: Daksa, Koločep, St.Andrija, Lopud, Ruda, Šipan, Mišnjak, Jakljan, Kosmeč, Goleč, Crkvine, Tajan and Olipa. Only three of the islands (Koločep, Lopud and Šipan) are inhabited and are the most popular to visit. Koločep is home to blue cave where (weather permitting) you can dive into the cave for some out of this world scenery, Lopud is home to the most popular sandy beach in the region, Šunj which is located in a large bay popular with boaters and locals. Šipan is located just past Lopud and although is the largest of the 3 inhabited islands has a very relaxed feel, with little fishing villages and seafront restaurants scattered along its bays.
There is no better way to experience these islands than to spoil yourself and hire a boat with skipper to take you exploring. Sure you will see cheaper options in the form of ‘Fish Picnics’ and ‘3 island group cruises’ but you will be experiencing it with large group of tourists and be on a fixed schedule of what to see and do. Hiring a private boat with skipper will give you the flexibility and freedom to explore the islands at your own pace, go swimming and snorkeling in the bay of your choice and when you want to relax and take it all in, simply lay on a sun lounge and let the world go by. Remember your on holidays so make the most of it and spoil yourself.
